Brrrr……It’s Cold Outside

As the cold weather (and Polar Vortex) approach, there are a few things that you need to do.

Whether you own a home or condo or rent an apartment, it is very important that you keep the heat on even when you are away for an extended period of time. We suggest that you keep your thermostat at a temperature of at least 50 degrees.  If you have a security system, you might want to consider adding a low temperature alarm to your warning system.  Sometimes it’s a combination of temperature and wind that can cause pipes to freeze.  As you know, water freezes at 32 degrees.  If the temperature in your home falls below 32 degrees, the water in the pipes will freeze.  The problem occurs when the temperature starts to rise and the pipes thaw.  That’s when the pipes break sending water into your home as well as anything below or next to you.  The damage done by burst pipes can be extraordinary!  The amount of money you think you are saving be turning off the heat can be quickly spent making repairs due to frozen pipes.

If you are going to be away for more than a day or two, it’s a good idea to let the AJM office know and provide them with an emergency contact number. Also, leave a key with a neighbor or nearby friend.  This way if there is an emergency AJM will be able to get into your home and not have to break a window or door to get in.

Another thing to be aware of is where you park your vehicle during a snow storm. Be sure to keep the driveway clear so that the snow plow can get to the property.  If you’re home, keep an eye out for the plow…..you might be able to move your car and get your parking space plowed too!

We live in the Northeast and cold and snow happens….we can’t do anything about it. By being prepared we’ll be able to get through it and Spring will be here before we know it.
